Aamir Khan was born into a family that was involved in the Hindi film industry- his father Tahir Hussain was a film producer and his uncle Nasir Hussain was a producer, director and an actor. With several successful films that have met with both commercial and critical success, Aamir Khan is one of the leading actors in the Hindi film industry today and also one of the most critically acclaimed ones. In 1986, Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta, with whom he had two children. In 2002, the marriage ended and Khan married Kiran Rao in 2005.

Career:
Aamir Khan debuted as a child actor, in 1973, in Nasir Hussain’s film Yaadon Ki Baarat. His first performance as an adult actor was for the 1984 film Holi, but Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak is considered to be his first commercial success. The film effectively launched Khan’s career as an actor , thanks to his much-publicized “chocolate boy” looks. It was in the same year that he received his first National Film Award for his performance in the film Raakh. This success was followed by successful  films that released in the late eighties and early nineties that include Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Rangeela.

Aamir Khan, quite unusually ,  acts in one or two films in a year.  The1996 film Raja Hindustani released and turned out to be a blockbuster. In the following years, Khan’s films didn’t fare particularly well and it was only with the 1997 film Ishq that he once again began to see success in the movie market. The 1998 film Ghulam saw him turn into a playback singer with the song, “Aye, kya bolti tu?” Sarfarosh and Earth were quite successful . His 2000 release, Mela, was  a flop.

In 2001, Aamir Khan acted in Lagaan,  the maiden production of the Aamir khan Productions. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Award in 74th Academy Awards. He won his second Filmfare for this film. The year also saw the release of the extremely successful film Dil Chahta Hai. He then took a four-year-long hiatus and came back with  Mangal Pandey: The Rising and Rang De Basanti . A year later, he made his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par And in 2008, he  followed up with Ghajini and with 3 Idiots in 2009, both of which  were hits. His next film is Delhi Belly, which will release in 2011.The Indian Government awarded him with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.
